Anne Vitger is testing the hypothesis that physical exercise has health promoting effects in dogs, and that exercise in combination with caloric restriction is better than caloric restriction alone for overweight/obese dogs.
The project aims to study
- the effects on metabolic function measured by insulin resistance, inflammatory markers, plasma lipids and lipoproteins, study the effects on body composition and fat distribution, and
- the effects on physical fitness measured by endurance, habitual daily activity, resting heart rate, resting metabolic rate, muscle enzymes and mitochondrial changes.
The group in functional morphology is involved by providing estimates of energy expenditure, and processing and analysing mitochondria shape and size in response to training.
